In 1908 Chaikov was apprenticed to a Kiev engraver. He attracted the attention of the sculptor Naum Aronson, who helped him to obtain a scolarship in Paris. He studied in Paris 1910-12 under Aronson and at the Ecole des Beaux Arts 1912-13. He taught from 1924 to 1931at the Moscow Vkhutein.
