Karandash, Caran d'Ache (The Pencil) was born as Emmanuel Poiré, grandson of a soldier from Napoleon's Grande Armée who was wounded in the Battle of Borodino. He was raised by a Polished family who adopted him after the death of his grandfather. In 1877 he emigrated to France where he since lived and worked mainly as a caricaturist.
