Karl Bryullov, son of Paul Brulleau, studied 1809-1821 at the St. Petersburg Imperial Academy of Arts. Between 1822 and 1835 he worked as a portrait and genre painter in Rome. His painting 'The last day of Pompeii, created in its day a sensation and established Briullov as a master of historical painting. In 1836 he returned to St. Petersburg and taught at the academy until 1848. He spent his last years of his life in Italy. |
