After intial art studies in icon painting, Bogdanov Belskii studied at the Moscow School of Painting, Sculpture and  Architecture from 1884 to 1889 and from 1894 to 1895 at the St. Petersburg Academy of Art. Bogdanov Belskii became a member of the Perdvizhniki (Wanderers) and was active in St. Petersburg. In 1921 he moved to Riga. He died in Berlin fleeing the Red Army
