Berman, born into a jewish family, fled 1919 with his family to France where he studied with Christian Bérard at the Paris Académie Rancoon.  During World War II Berman was confined to a german work camp. In 1946 he moved to the USA. In 1948 he married the musician Sylvia Marlowe.
