Berman studied privatly under P. Naumov and S. Grizenberg in St. Petersburg. In1920 he emigrated to Paris, where he, together with his younger brother Leonid in 1920-1922 studied at the Academy Paul Ranson under Bonnard, Denis, Vuillard and Valloton. He exhibited from 1923 in the Salon d'Automne. In the 1930's he lived in the south of France. In 1936 he made his first trrip to the USA and he imigrated in 1940. In 1944 he became US citizen
