In 1925 the Bekaryan family settled in Armenia. In 1932 Ara graduated from the Geghard College in Yerevan where he studied under V. Gaipetian and S. Arakelyan.
From 1933 to 1939 he studied at the Leningrad Art Academy under A. Osmerkin.
In 1945 he was awarded the title of Honored Art Worker of the Soviet Armenian Republic and in 1965 he became People's Artist of the Soviet Armenian Republic.
