In 1933 Basov graduated from The Vitebsk art school. From 1938 to 1948 he studied at the Moscow Surikov Art Institute. Basov is best known for a his illustrations to the works of Russian classical literature (Chekhov, Tolstoy, Turgenev, Dostoyevsky) and the works of Soviet writers about the great patriotic war. He worked for the publishing houses such as Foreign languages, Belgosizdat and Goslitizdat.
