Basmanov studied 1919-22 at the regional art school in Altai. In 1922 he left for Petrograd and studied 1924-25 in Mansurov's studio. He graduated from the Leningrad Art-technicum in 1927. In 1929 he started working for Detgiz, the state publishing house for children's books. He lived and worked in Leningrad.
