Bakhchanian was born to an ethnic Armenian family. He studied painting at the Kharkov Art School. Around 1965 he moved to Moscow where he worked at the Literaturnaia gazeta. In 1974 he emigrated to New York where he worked with other Russian and Soviet artists in the field of literature and art.
