Born in 1899, Artzybasheff was the son of the distinguished novelist and playwright, Michael Artsybashev. He was brought up and educated in St. Petersburg. He studied at the Tenisheva school in Saint Petersburg and began at an early age with book illustrations. During the civil war he enrolled in the White Ukrainian Army as a machine-gunner. Then the Bolshevist advance drove him further south until he finally reached Odessa and found a berth as sailor, and in 1921 he landed in New York where he worked as a theatre-designer and illustrator. In 1923 some of his works were exhibited in Moscow and Kazan. In 1931 he had two one-man exhibitions in New York.
