Arkhipov, born Abram Pyrikov, studied at the Moscow School of painting, Sculpture and Architecture under V. Perov, V. Polenov and V. Makovskii. From 1883 to 1885 he studied at the St. Petersburg Academy of Art before joining the 'Wanderers' After the revolution het taught at the Moscow Vkhutemas and joined the AKhR artists' group
