Apollon, a monthly journal for art and literature, published in St. Petersburg by Makovskii and Vrangel from 1909 to 1917 was founded by Mikhail Kuzmin, Innokentii Annenskii, Nikolai Gumilov and Sergei Makovskii, the latter being publisher and editor. Started as a journal for the symbolists, it became the main stronghold for the Acmeists after 1913 as is demonstrated by the publications in that year of the works of Gumilov, Akhmatova, Mandelstam and Gorodetskii. The journal had strong bonds with Mir Iskusstva (World of Art)and was seen as a conservative element by the futurists and avant-garde. In 1909 and 1910 annually 12 issues were published and in the later years 10 issues per annum. In total 82 issues were published. The LS Collection holds 45 issues.
