Altmann began to paint at the early age of ten when he recieved a contract for a fresco on a wall in a synagogue. At the age of eleven he went to Odessa where he worked at odd-jobs. In 1903 he went to Paris via Vienna. In Paris he studied at the academy Julian under Bouguereau, Toudouze and the sculptor Boucher. In 1908 he had his first exhibition at the Salon d'Automne. In 1912 he settled in Nemours and in 1914 he travelled with Chagall to Russia.
